  KASIM GÖKTAŞ, İSHAK ÖZKAN

Selçuk Üniversitesi Meram Tıp Fakültesi Psikiyatri Anabilim Dalı, KONYA

Sleep disorders is one of the leading problems of elderly. Numerous population-based studies have indicated that up to %40 of old people are dissatisfied with the quality of their sleep and complain of chronic sleep problems. Their sleep may be affected by a number of factors, such as medical illness, psychiatric disorders, medication use, circadian rhythm changes, age-related sleep changes or primary sleep disorders. Prevalance of primary sleep disorders such as sleep apnea syndrome, restless leg syndrome, periodic leg movements, REM sleep behavior disorder are increased in elderly. The sleep loss resulting from sleep disturbances can lead to daytime sleepiness, chronic fatigue, and increased risk of falls and accidents. Sleep disorders has a strong, negative effect on the quality of life. Evalaution of sleep disorders in the older patients requires a careful history and physical examination, supplemented by a sleep diary. Treatment of underlying conditions and nonpharmacologic improvement (sleep hygiene) are first-line therapy, but pharmacologic agents such as benzodiazepines or antidepressants may be needed.
