  RASİH YAZKAN

Şanlıurfa Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Göğüs Cerrahisi Kliniği, Şanlıurfa, TÜRKİYE

Trauma is the leading cause of death in young adult population. Chest trauma follows head and extremity traumas with an icreasing incidence due to altering life circumstances. Hemothorax is one of the clinical manifestations of chest trauma which threatens life. It is mostly seen in the early stages but it can rarely occur in late stages. Correct diagnosis and appropriate surgical approach decrease the mortality and morbidity. Tube thoracostomy, thoracotomy and video- assisted thoracoscopic surgery are useable in treatment. The objective of this case report is to emphasize that patients can develop hemothorax in late stages after chest trauma without a systemic diseases and in the absence of anti-coagulant, anti-aggregating drug usage. Multiple fractures in the ribs also constitute a risk factor for the development of hemothorax. It is in greate importance of paying attention on chest trauma patients in early and late stages.
