Background: Its common to see depression in family practice. Aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence and risk factors of depression in elderly who are registered patients of Adnan Menderes University (ADU) Umurlu Family Medicine out-patient clinic. Patients and Methods: Ninety, ADU Family Medicine out-patient clinic, registered elderly patients, who have agreed to participate in the study are included in the study. They filled out a form for demographics and Turkish version of 30 questioned Yasevage Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Fifty-one elderly had over 11 points and they are further examined for their mental health status. Results: Of 51 elderly, 37 showed Major Depressive Disorder or depressive symptoms. Women and widows got higher GDS scores. Elderly who live in their childrens’ home are at higher risk of depression than who live with their spouses or alone but having visitors. Presence of two or more chronic illness is a risk factor for depression. Conclusions: Elderly patients and those who have high risk of depression should be checked for symptoms of depression to be evaluated further with respect to their mental health. This will resemble a development in the health conditions of the elderly, considering that they usually refer to primary care setting as their first step of healthcare.
