Aim: Atrial septal defect is one of the most common congenital heart diseases in adults and there is controversy about the influence of patient age on the benefit of surgical repair. The aim of our study was to assess the surgical repair in patients with atrial septal defect operated on various ages. Methods: Between January 2000 and March 2004, 30 consecutive patients with atrial septal defect underwent surgical repair in our hospital. There were 23 female and 7 male patients, ranging in age from 4 to 66 years with a mean age of 29,90±16,04 years. Results: There were no operative deaths. One patient had coronary artery disease associated with atrial septal defect. Single stage operation for coronary artery disease and ASD was performed. ASD closure resulted in an increase in left ventricular ejection fraction, and decreases in pulmonary artery pressure and cardiothoracic ratio. There was a significant improvement in NYHA functional class after surgical closure of the ASD. Conclusion: In our series, surgical closure of ASD in various ages was found to be successful.
