The increasing use of radiological diagnostic methods has resulted in the detection of large numbers of nonpalpabl lesions. The purpose of this study to determine the BI-RADS category importance in outcomes of frozen section and permanent section in nonpalpabl breast lesions. From March 2005 to January 2007 total 158 women were included the study. Hook wire localization was performed with mammography or ultrasonography. Masses with microcalcifications were excised and sent for specimen mammography. All malignant lesions were treated by definitive surgery. The mean age was 48.4±10.2 years (range, 17-76); 64 patients (40.5%) were 50 years and over, and 94 patients (59.5%) were younger than 50 years. The BI-RADS final assessment categories included 59 (37.3%) category III, 84 (53.2%) category IV, and 15 (9.5%) category V lesions. Frozen section revealed that 112 lesions were benign and 46 were malignant, however, permanent section revealed that 109 lesions were benign and 49 were malignant. We found that frozen section and permanent section were in concordance in the lesions with BI-RADS category III and V. However, larger case studies necessary to draw any conclusion for BI-RADS category IV lesions.
